How to Know When Your Pears Are Ripe

Ripen at room temperature

When you purchase or pick pears, ripen them at room temperature, leaving them on a counter or in a bowl. Once the pears are ripe, store them in the fridge. Cold temperatures slow the ripening process, so your ripe pears will keep in the fridge for up to three to five days.

Speed up the process

You can accelerate pear ripening by putting them in a bowl or paper bag with other ripening fruits. The ethylene, a gas naturally emitted by fruit while ripening, from the other fruit will ripen your pears more quickly.

Check the color

You can tell the ripeness of some pear varieties by looking at the color. For example, some pears turn from green to yellow, indicating they’re ready to eat.

Hold it in your hand

Gently squeeze the area around the stem of the pear, also called the neck. If the skin of the pear gives a little, it’s ripe and ready to go. If a pear is starting to become squishy towards the center, it is overripe, but you can still use it for soups, smoothies and many other recipes.
