Cheese Fondues Make for Cozy Dinners

What better way is there to enjoy a cozy dinner with your sweetie than with some fine wine, great conversation and a bubbling pot of cheese fondue? Combining just the right amount of decadence with a creamy texture, fondue is synonymous with romance. Treat someone special to a memorable meal this Valentine's Day, or any day, by whipping up delicious cheese fondue with these simple tips.
A great fondue starts with delicious cheese. For a lovely, gooey texture, choose cheeses that melt well, such as the Classic Cheddar in our Cheddar Flight. If you want to create a complex and unique flavor, pick at least two different varieties. Start with your special someone's favorite cheeses and experiment with your ratios until you find the perfect combination.

You can make your fondue even better by combining gourmet cheese with a little wine. To keep it traditional, choose a dry white wine, such as a Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. Not only does the wine make the cheese taste fantastic, it also helps break it down, making the fondue even creamier.
With your ingredients ready, it's time to get melting! Combine your gourmet wine and cheese in a small pot with just a dash of thickener, such as flour. For best results, shred your cheese and combine your thickener with the wine before mixing together. Now, all you have to do is let the cheese melt, and pour it into your fondue pot for serving!
While the basic recipe for fondue is simply cheese, wine and thickener, you can always have a little fun by getting a bit more creative. Try using unique cheeses, such as the delicious options from our Hickory Farms Smoked Flight of Three Cheeses, which include Smoked Garlic Cheddar or Smoked Pepper Jack. If you're feeling even more adventurous, try adding a little something extra with a flavored liqueur, such as cherry brandy, or spice up your fondue with nutmeg and mustard powder.
With these tips, you can enjoy a romantic meal surrounded by Hickory Farms' gourmet cheese and wine and, most importantly, your special Valentine.
Decorate Tables & Spreads with Creative Food Labels
Decorate Tables & Spreads with Creative Food Labels
Get your guests excited about the tasty foods they are about to enjoy by including food labels in your spread or table setting. Not only do food labels show off the delicious flavors and wholesome ingredients of the dishes you are serving, but they are also a sign of a thoughtful host. Food labels make it easier for picky eaters and guests with dietary restrictions.
If you’re struggling to come up with a creative way to incorporate food labels into your tablescape, allow us to share a few of our favorite ideas for decorative food labels.
Chalkboard table runners are a fantastic way to label foods and decorate tables at the same time, as in this example from Pinterest. They are especially great for achieving a shabby-chic look. Not to mention, they make labeling simple and you can reuse them over and over.

Here’s another spin on the idea. Instead of a table runner, paint small buckets with chalkboard paint that can be labeled and used to serve food.

Little flags are also a simple and sophisticated way to label food items. All you need are tooth picks or kabob sticks and handwritten or computer-printed labels. Look how beautifully these labels work for an elegant gourmet cheese spread. For extra effect or a splash of color, use ribbon.

You can also make your own food labels with simple picture frames. Depending on the stationary, font, borders, and frames you choose, you can go as casual or upscale as you want.

This is perhaps one of the most clever ideas we've seen – Using a mini artists’ easel to support a label printed on cardstock. How creative!

If you enjoy writing out the labels yourself, here’s a cute idea – consider using scrapbook supplies and pens to make the labels for your party.

The traditional cheese ball can easily be transformed into a fun seasonal appetizer by molding it into a pumpkin shape. Start by shredding a mixture of cheese, such as our Farmhouse Cheddar and Smoked Cheddar Blend. Then, use a food processor to combine the cheese with cream cheese, dry mustard and garlic, blending until smooth. Spoon the mixture into a pumpkin-shaped muffin tin and refrigerate overnight. Lastly, top everything off with parsley to create a cute little vine effect.

Start by lining a platter with our Olive Oil and Rosemary Crackers. Then, top each cracker off with a piece of Our Signature Beef or Turkey Summer Sausage. Next, cut our cheeses into thin slices. Your kids will have a blast using cookie cutters and butter knives to cut bats, pumpkins and cats out of our cheeses.

Another adorable way to serve your cheese is to transform it into a witch's broom. First, cut our Smoked Gouda Blend into thin slices. Then, fold each slice in half and use scissors to cut a bit of fringe into the cheese. Finish by rolling the cheese around the bottom of a pretzel stick, fringe pointing down, and securing with a fresh chive.

A cute shape can make a simple sandwich extra special. Start by layering chicken salad, slices of our Fuji Apples and our Farmhouse Cheddar between slices of white bread. Then, use a cookie cutter to create ghost outlines. You can finish this spooky appetizer by using black olives to form the ghost's eyes.

Date night at home recipes
Reasons to Do Date Night at Home
While going out for a night on the town with your significant other is normally the perfect go-to date idea, it can sometimes get tiring. From reservations and parking to trying to find a babysitter if you have kids, sometimes it can seem like more of a hassle than its worth. Instead, why not consider a date night at home? You can still share great food and laughs without the price tag or added hassle of leaving your home, which is especially appealing during winter or when the weather is less than desirable. So cozy up with a blanket and your special someone for a low-key date that won’t break the bank.
At-Home Date Night Ideas
When you’re spending a night in, you may be worried about how to make it feel special and not just part of your typical routine. Here are a few suggestions to switch things up:
• Instead of simply watching TV, choose a different activity besides your typical Netflix binge. Bring out the board games, play cards or build a puzzle. All of these activities will help you bond while also encouraging relaxation.
• Create a playlist of all your favorite songs. Spend the evening dancing around the living room together.
• Pretend you just started dating and play an icebreaker/get-to-know-you type game where each person has to share things the other person doesn’t already know about them.
Date Night Recipes
Another way to avoid having things feel mundane is to incorporate a new dish into your evening. While we always recommend a bottle of wine to go with your date night at home, check out some fresh dinner ideas to spice things up.
• Lemon Chicken with Asparagus—this lemon-fresh favorite will have you both clamoring for seconds.
• Gnocchi with Sausage and Spinach—bring a little Italian flair to your evening with this festive pasta dish.
• Stuffed French Bread—truly make an impression with these delicious sandwiches. Who can say no to French bread?
Or, if you’re planning a spontaneous night in, use your Hickory Farms gift basket for inspiration. Slice up delicious sausage and cheese to be paired with crackers and mustards for a no-fuss meal that you and your sweetheart can enjoy snuggled up next to a roaring fire or outside on the porch in the warm weather. No matter what you end up doing, the best way to embrace a date night at home is by having fun and creating new memories and traditions for you both to cherish for years to come.
